Cimmaron

Cimarron Cemetery

Montrose County, Colorado

The Cimarron Cemetery at Cimarron, Colorado, is located on the hillside above the present Newberry’s Store.  Many markers and fencing have gone by the way with the weather and time taking their toll on them.  I have compiled the following information from extensive research in the Montrose papers, and information from different individuals.  It may not be entirely accurate but very possibly it is pretty complete.

After this research had been done the Cimarron Club decided to take a day to clean up the cemetery prior to Memorial Day.  They then decided to have a plaque engraved with the names on it of those who were known to be buried in the cemetery.

The clean-up day was held May 4, 1985.  Those helping were, Dick & Lois Veo, Aileen & Albert Soderquist, Gene & Gretchen Tate, Jake & Rose (Donaldson) Barbee, John & Joann (Barbee) Young of Fruita, Jerry & Dorothy Denison, Carol Ray, Larry Griffin and Dona Freeman representing the club.  The fence was fixed, sagebrush cleared, trash picked up with the results being very gratifying to all.

There are a total of sixty-eight graves in the cemetery, with twenty-six of them being unmarked.  There may be more but these were the ones according to the Daily Press information and family information. Since the first papers that were saved were in 1896, the following did not have notices that information could be secured from:
